Listen to Northern Guard cofounder Ken Butcher tell the story of how NGS came to be (from a March 11, 2015 panel about Detroit City Football Club at the University of Michigan School of Kinesiology).
We’ve been here since the beginning and our numbers grow each time City steps out onto the pitch. We’re often accused of being brash, but we’re not doing it to be jerks. We’re just proud of DCFC because it’s the best club in the land. People say we’re ruining football and we’ve been told that no one likes us. We don’t care.
If you’re a supporter of another club and are lucky enough to have DCFC visit your town, rest assured that NGS traveling supporter — the Rouge Rovers — will be there. Don’t get up, though, we’ll make ourselves at home. We know some of your local soccer moms will get their noses out of joint when we march through the gates, but we’re not there for them, we’re there to support our club. It’s just an added bonus that the kids at your match have more fun with us than you (and probably learned some new words, too).
We keep no membership rolls and charge no dues. Our only requirement is that you stand alongside us and give your all for 90 minutes.
We come from all backgrounds, beliefs and traditions. We reject racism, sexism, homophobia and anything else that makes anyone feel unwelcome in our stands. The only two things we hate are hate and Oh*o. No matter where you come from, if you support City, we support you.
Do you want to be part of the Northern Guard Supporters? March with us to a match and sing and scream yourself hoarse with us for 90 minutes. Think we’re ruining the beautiful game? Go sit in silence in your team’s stadium and suck an orange slice.
